15th Annual Bowed Psaltery Symphony to Fill Cedar Lakes with Appalachian Sound

Ripley, WV — The 15th Annual Bowed Psaltery Symphony returns to Cedar Lakes Conference Center on Thursday, May 7 at 7:00 PM in our Assembly Hall, celebrating the heritage traditions of old-time Appalachian string band music.

Under the direction of the talented Tish and Greg Westman, the symphony brings together musicians from across the country for a one-of-a-kind collaborative performance. Throughout the year, participants rehearse virtually, building both skill and community before gathering in person for an intensive week of final rehearsals at Cedar Lakes.

Marking their 4th year at Cedar Lakes, the symphony brings together music lovers both old and young, celebrating the harmonic blend of the bowed psaltery, mountain dulcimer, harp, guitar, drums, and more. Participants are entertained not only by the beautiful blend of melodies, but also by various performances and singing.

This year’s theme, Appalachian String Band Music, highlights traditional melodies and arrangements that reflect our region’s cultural roots. At its heart, string band music is the foundational root of American folk and country music, blending the rich sounds of Scottish and Irish fiddle tunes and African American banjo traditions. The resulting sound is a rhythmic and hypnotic layered melody that inspires reels, jigs, and beautiful storytelling.

The event will take place at our Assembly Hall on May 7, 2026, at 7:00pm. Tickets are $8 each and are available for purchase in advance at the Cedar Lakes Front Office or at 5:00 PM on May 7th at the Assembly Hall. Children under 12 are free. Those attending our Folk Art at the Lakes Craft Workshops that week are invited to experience the symphony free of charge.

Join us for an evening of music, melodies, and mountain magic that brings Appalachian traditions to life. This night is sure to be an evening of divine entertainment that will get you toe-tapping along to the sound of our cultural roots.
